Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Matchday 8, October 19, 2024
This past Saturday, Stade Brestois 29 faced off against their local rivals Stade Rennais just days before an important Champions League match with Bayer Leverkusen. After a hard-fought battle that saw Brest initially take the lead with a successful penalty converted by Romain Del Castillo, Rennes made impactful substitutions that saw them equalize late in the game.
Match Overview
Before kickoff, Stade Brestois received unfortunate news as defender Julien Le Cardinal was sidelined during warm-ups due to an injury. In response, coach Eric Roy turned to Abdoulaye Ndiaye to fill in at center-back. From the outset of the match, both teams struggled offensively; Brest could not penetrate Rennes’ three-man defense while Rennes failed to create significant scoring chances. The first twenty minutes ended without any shots recorded from either side.
The rhythm of the match improved after thirty minutes as Brest began holding more possession but still couldn’t translate it into offensive threats. Mahdi Camara came close with a half-volley that struck Steve Mandanda’s crossbar followed by Hugo Magnetti’s attempt hitting straight into Mandanda’s arms moments later thanks to a well-placed assist from Ludovic Ajorque. On their part, Rennes attempted to respond but Amine Gouiri’s shot was cleared away safely by goalkeeper Marco Bizot.
Early in the second half brought some drama when Breizh were awarded a questionable penalty after Azor Matusiwa handled Pierre Lees-Melou’s deflected shot. Romain Del Castillo stepped up and confidently slotted home his third penalty of this Ligue 1 season—a move which prompted Julien Stéphan of Rennes to make critical tactical adjustments and shift his side into a back four by introducing Glen Kamara and Jota.
Brest seized control following their goal but as fatigue set in for them and fresh players entered for Rennes—Andrès Gomez and Albert Gronbaek—the dynamic shifted once again. Gronbaek played an instrumental role by assisting Arnaud Kalimuendo who delivered a cross met expertly at close range by Jota in the dying moments of the match. This marked Jota’s first goal since joining Les Rouge et Noir from Celtic FC—leaving Brest lamenting missed opportunities while creating questions surrounding Julien Stéphan’s standing at Rennes following this draw.
