Manchester United have been dealt a major blow to their – albeit already dented – hopes of signing Jean-Clair Todibo. The 24-year-old defender was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford earlier this summer, but the switch was intercepted by UEFA, who cited a concern that the deal would breach rules on multi-club ownership.
Todibo, who sees his contract at the Allianz Riviera expire in June 2027, featured 30 times for OGC Nice in Ligue 1 last season, keeping 15 clean sheets. Playing a key role in Francesco Farioli’s side, the France international helped Les Aiglons finish fifth and secure Conference League qualification.
His impressive performances have reportedly attracted interest from some top clubs, including West Ham and Juventus. In fact, according to French publication Foot Mercato, the Hammers have reached a €36m (£30.2m) agreement with Nice for the transfer of Todibo.
The report states that the former Barcelona centre-back is pushing to join Juventus, who have labelled his arrival as a ‘priority’ this summer. It’s said that West Ham and Nice have agreed an initial season-long loan deal that includes an option to buy clause – that is worth €36m (£30.2m) and does not include performance-related bonuses.
Foot Mercato outline that Nice are pushing Tobido to join Julen Lopetegui’s side despite interest from the Old Lady. Last month, Sir Jim Ratcliffe slammed UEFA for stopping Manchester United from signing the Frenchman.
“They’ve said we can sell him to another Premiership club,” said the Nice owner, as quoted by the MailOnline. “But we can’t sell to Manchester United. But that’s not fair on the player and I don’t see what that achieves.”

In June, Tobido was quizzed on a potential move to Old Trafford. Speaking to the MailOnline, he said: “It’s nice to hear all the compliments. I’m trying to stay focused on my game and my team-mates – but for sure I am open to playing in the Premier League. I’m going to keep that for me! Nice try.”
