Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie were released by Newcastle United at the end of last season, but there is a chance they could soon be reunited.

The duo left St James’ Park when their contracts expired, with Newcastle United unable to justify keeping them despite Eddie Howe’s desire to do just that.

When it emerged that Newcastle United would not be competing in Europe, it became unviable for the Magpies to offer Dummett and Ritchie contract extensions. Tributes were paid to the duo, with former Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi thanking Dummett and Ritchie for their contributions.

Now they are free agents, and are still on the look out for new clubs as the 2024/25 season looms. Pre-season is very much underway, yet neither Dummett nor Ritchie have managed to secure a new employer.

Sheffield United eye Paul Dummett

Following his release by Newcastle United, there has not been too much speculation regarding Dummett’s future. However, that has now changed.

They report that the Blade are hoping to bring in the 32-year-old, with Chris Wilder keen to add more experience to a squad that suffered relegation from the Premier League last season. He believes that Dummett could provide that, while he would also offer versatility with his ability to play at centre-back and left-back.

Matt Ritchie is also a target after Newcastle United release

Joining Sheffield United would give Dummett the chance to play in the Championship, and it could also allow him to continue his career alongside Ritchie.

That is because it was reported recently that Sheffield United have made a contract offer for Ritchie, in another attempt to bring more experience to Bramall Lane.

Whether or not Sheffield United would sanction moves for both players remains to be seen, while it is still unknown if Ritchie is interested in joining Wilder’s side. It is well documented that the 34-year-old would like to return to Portsmouth, which is where he started his career.

For both players, it looks like their future will lie in the Championship. They could even end up playing for the same team, which would be somewhat amusing after only just parting ways.
