Judy Newman, tennis pro at La Madrona Athletic Club in Santa Cruz and a Scotts Valley resident, teamed up with Vicki Buholz of Dallas in the International Tennis Federations’ Seniors World Championships, reaching the finals in the Women’s 50+ division before falling to Australia’s Ros Balodis and Leanne Swaysland 7-6(4) 1-6 (10-5).
Newman also participated in singles, winning her first-round match before facing the draw’s No. 1 seed Brenda Foster of Australia in the second round. Newman fought hard, winning a second-set tiebreaker and pushing to a tiebreaker in the third set as well before falling 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-6(6) in a four-hour match. Her teammate from the team tournament, Fran Chandler of Jackson, Tenn., won the title.
