Where Mbappe fits in for Real Madrid
80,000 excited Real Madrid supporters flocked to the Bernabeu to watch Kylian Mbappe finally don the white of Los Blancos.
Mbappe, 25, completed his long-awaited move from Paris Saint-Germain last month before leading France at Euro 2024 in his first tournament as captain. Didier Deschamps’ side went deep in the knockout phase yet again but were stopped by Spain in the semi-final, freeing Mbappe up to fully prepare for life in Madrid.
A sold-out crowd on Tuesday watched his unveiling as a Real player after meeting club president Florentino Perez. The French superstar was shown signing his £242,000-a-week five-year contract, although he’s still taken a pay cut from his lucrative deal at PSG which expired on June 30.
Mbappe proudly sported the No.9 shirt, the same number which Cristiano Ronaldo donned in his first season at the club. Tickets for the presentation went on sale last Friday and, according to Spanish outlet AS, more than 85 per cent of them were sold by the end of the first day.
Zinedine Zidane, Real’s former manager and most famous French player, was notably in attendance. On a big screen for fans to see, Real showed images of a 13-year-old Mbappe with Zidane at their training ground, Valdebebas.
Mbappe gave a statement upon joining the 15-time European champions, posting on social media: “A dream come true. So happy and proud to join the club of my dreams, Real Madrid. Nobody can understand how excited I am right now. Can’t wait to see you, Madridistas, and thanks for your unbelievable support. ¡Hala Madrid!”
Ahead of Euro 2024, the 25-year-old revealed that some things made him ‘unhappy’ at PSG. “Finally, it’s official, I am going to be a Real Madrid player for the next five years,” Mbappe told a press conference.

I’m very, very happy [and] relieved, very proud to be joining a club where I’ve always dreamed of being.” The forward added: “I wasn’t unhappy at PSG, that would be to spit in the soup. [But] some things and some people made me unhappy.”
Mbappe is expected to make competitive debut for Real when they take on Europa League winners Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, August 14 in Warsaw. Then, after finishing 10 points clear of reigning champions Barcelona last season, Carlo Ancelotti’s side will begin their La Liga title defence away to Mallorca which is currently scheduled for Sunday, August 18.
