L’Équipe understands that Aurélien Tchouaméni (24) will miss France’s Euro 2024 opener against Austria as he continues to recover from a foot injury that has sidelined him since early May.
The Real Madrid midfielder suffered a fracture to his left metatarsal on 8th May and has not featured since. Whilst he was included in the squad to face Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League final earlier this month, he was not fit enough to play. He was still not sufficiently fit to face Luxembourg in a Euro 2024 preparation match and he will also be absent for the friendly against Canada on Sunday.
There was hope that he would, however, be fit to play in Les Bleus’ first game of Euro 2024, against Austria in Düsseldorf on 17th June. However, according to L’Équipe, it is almost impossible that Tchouaméni will feature. Whilst he is nearing a return, France’s coaching staff have anticipated a physical, intense match against Austria and they doubt the midfielder’s ability to compete in such a match at this stage. He is therefore likely to be preserved. N’Golo Kanté may take his place, as he did against Luxembourg.
